CANCELLED !!! Neutron Science Facilities at the China Advanced Research Reactor

After 50 years of service for the Research & Development in neutron science and technology, the Heavy Water Research Reactor (HWRR) (maximum power 10 MW) at China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) was shut down in 2007. The 60MW China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR) at CIAE has taken over this role, which has reached the first criticality in May, 2010 and got full power in March, 2012. It is a tank-in-pool type reactor using a D2 reflector for inverse neutron trap, and the expected max undisturbed thermal neutron flux is 8×1014 n/cm2•s. The reactor experiment hall houses a set of instruments connecting to 9 horizontal neutron beam tubes. Additionally, cold neutrons produced by a liquid hydrogen cold source are transported via 6 guide systems to the 30 × 60m2 guide hall, where a suite of scattering instruments are placed. As a multi-purpose research reactor, CARR is devoted to neutron scattering, neutron imaging, radioisotopes production, neutron transmutation doping silicon and neutron activation analysis, and so on. As the major research field, the Neutron Scattering Laboratory at CARR (NSL-CARR) is responsible for neutron scattering and neutron imaging research programs, opening to users from universities, industry and government labs in China and abroad. By now, nine neutron scattering instruments have been installed. The High Resolution Powder Diffractometer (HRPD), the High Intensity Powder Diffractometer (HIPD), the Residual Stress Diffractometer (RSD), the Triple-Axis Spectrometers I (CIAE-JCNS-TAS), the Four-Circle Diffractometer (FCD), the Texture Diffractometer (TD), and the Triple-Axis Spectrometers II (IOP-CIAE-TAS) are placed in the reactor experiment hall. The small-angle scattering instrument (SANS) and the horizontal sample-geometry Neutron Reflectometer (NR) are located in the guide hall. Neutron diffraction patterns have been successfully carried out on 5 instruments during the first testament from August 21 to 25, 2012. Other five instruments under construction are the Thermal and Cold Neutron Radiography Facilities, the Multi Axis Crystal Spectrometer, the Cold Neutron Triple Axis and the Industry and Engineering Application Diffractometer. The basic Extreme Sample Environment Equipments have been constructed, including high temperature furnace (1800℃), CCR(4K), PE-CELL(10GPa), gas system(600MPa) and magnet(7T). NSL-CARR has developed extensive cooperation with our prospective users from the universities and the institutes of China Academy of Sciences (CAS), based on the "Co-Constructing and Sharing". Also, NSL has consulted and worked closely with the international neutron community. In 2007, the first meeting of the International Advisory Committee for NSL-CARR on neutron science and technology and management was held in Beijing. NSL-CARR has tried multi-channel applications and successfully got the funding support form Chinese Ministry of Sciences and Technology, Chinese Ministry of Education, Chinese Natural Science Foundation and CAS. By now, the financial supports from the government are more than 70 million dollars. Since 2004, the neutron scattering user meeting was held every year in China. Its goal is to promote communications and collaborations between neutron sources and users. At present, more and more Chinese scientists have found the unique capabilities of neutron scattering method and the requirement is increasing rapidly. In future, there will be a large neutron scattering user community in China. Mission of NSL-CARR is just dedicated to serve neutron users from China and abroad for materials research with reliably optimized, progressively upgradable, and safely operated facilities and a devoted staff.
