Ultrafast pulses of coherent hard x-rays from the Linac Coherent
Light Source present new opportunities for studies of atomic-scale
dynamics in amorphous materials. In this talk, I will show that a
single ultrafast coherent x- ray pulse can be used to observe
speckles in the high-angle diffraction from liquid Ga, glassy
Ni2Pd2P and from B2O3. This demonstrates the feasibility of the
proposed split-pulse technique to measure x-ray photon correlation
spectroscopy. We discuss the implied capability of this source to study dynamics over a wide range of time scales with sub-picosecond
time resolution.
