How to build a memory for quantum microwave light ?

Mardi 4 septembre 2012 15:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : Salle "Remy Lemaire" K 223 (1er étage) bât. K de l’institut Néel/CNRS - 25 rue de smartyrs - 38000 Grenoble

Orateur : Jean-Damien PILLET (Laboratoire Pierre Aigrain, Paris )

Quantum Information Processing relies on our ability to create, store, manipulate and measure quantum bits of information. In the microwave domain, this information can be encoded in fragile non classical states of light. The Josephson Parametric Converter (JPC) - a device made of two superconducting resonators coupled by a ring of Josephson Junctions - has already been shown to provide faithful generation of entangled microwave photons [1]. Furthermore, when pumped at the appropriate frequency, it also works as a quantum limited amplifier [2,3] which is a crucial element for reliable measurements of quantum states of light. In this presentation, I will show that, in a new regime, the JPC also fulfils the function of a memory. Quantum microwave fields can be stored in a superconducting resonator (memory resonator), well isolated from its environment. The Josephson ring couples the memory to a second superconducting resonator (readout head) which is accessible through an external line. Because this coupling rate is simply controlled by the power of an external pump from perfect isolation to large coupling, we are able to read/write the memory by transferring microwave fields out of/into the memory resonator, quickly, coherently and on demand.
