Probing short-range forces with polarized helium 3

Many proposed extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics predict the existence of weakly interacting slim (sub-eV) particles (WISP). Since WISPs are light particles, they could mediate a new macroscopic spin-dependent interaction between ordinary particles which can be interpreted as a short-range pseudo-magnetic field. A new sensitive method has been recently developed in Grenoble to probe such a pseudo-magnetic interaction, using hyperpolarized 3He gas, through an anomalous depolarization of the 3He nuclei. The anomalous effect could be separated from the usual depolarization mechanisms by studying the longitudinal depolarization rate as a function of an applied magnetic field. A collaboration was initiated between the ILL and the LPSC to set up a dedicated magnetic facility. I will present the status of the experiment and the correction of some systematic effects. Then the constraint obtained on an exotic spin-dependent coupling will be shown.
