Combining SANS and SAXS : functionalized nanoparticles in dispersion

Jeudi 12 novembre 2015 10:30 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : ILL 4, Seminar Room, 71 avenue des Martyrs - Grenoble

Orateur : Tobias UNRUH (Nanomaterialcharakterisierung (Streumethoden), Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Lehrstuhl für Kristallographie und Strukturphysik, Staudtstraße 3, 91058 Erlangen, Germany)

Liquid colloidal dispersions are ubiquitous in our daily life and in industrial processes. Using soap we produce suspensions and emulsions of dirt. Substances can also be solubilized in micelles on a molecular scale. Milk, paint, blood, mayonnaise, hand creams, and shower gel are other examples of colloids you know from daily life. In industry most nanoparticles are produced in liquid dispersion either by top-down (milling, homogenization, ...) or bottom up (precipitation, self-assembly, ...) methods.

In our research group we are interested in the properties of nanoparticles in liquid dispersions, in the mechanism of their formation process, and in the behavior while processing the nanoparticles. Hereby, we focus on semiconducting and metalic quantum dots and organic nanoparticles for pharmaceutical applications.

The societal and industrial demand for nanotechnology and nanoparticulate systems becomes increasingly significant. However, questions like dispersion stability, particle growth, and the mechanism of nanoparticle formation is not yet well understood which hinders their directed and optimized production and application.

In my talk I will demonstrate the power of combined SANS/SAXS studies for the determination of the mesoscopic structure of highly complex colloidal systems. Besides the particle size and shape, detailed information of the structure of the interface layer between the dispersed nanoparticles and the dispersion medium can be extracted from measurements of native dispersions. The future in this field is clearly set : the development of the interfacial layer during nucleation, growth, aging and further processing needs to be understood. For this purpose simultaneous SANS/SAXS measurements of the same sample are indispensable.
