Preparation and Characterization of ZnO QDs : Superiority of Novel Organometallic Approach over Classical Inorganic Sol-Gel Procedure

Jeudi 28 janvier 2016 11:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : CEA, Bâtiment C5, Salle 421A - 17 rue des martyrs - 38000 Grenoble

Orateur : Janusz LEWINSKI (the Warsaw University of Technology and the Polish Academy of Sciences (Poland))

The inherent and unique physicochemical properties of ZnO NCs are dependent on a variety of factors, including chemical composition, crystallinity, size-dispersion, shape, surface structure and surface coating ligands. All these factors are largely determined by the synthetic procedures used. In this regard, commonly used sol–gel methodology has played a key role in advancing ZnO NCs science and provided access to a multitude of tailored ZnO nanostructures. Howver, this possesses also some significant impediments. The initial nucleation and growth are controlled kinetically, which makes it difficult to terminate the reaction at the desired stage of particle growth. The lack of control over the fast NC formation likely inhibits the uniformity of particle surface composition and morphology, as well as permeability of any ligand shell. As a result, the classical sol-gel method provides ZnO QDs that are insufficiently shielded against the environment (e.g., their photoluminescent properties are not retained after surface modification vis the Cu(I)-catalyzed click reaction). Strikingly, the oxide surface structure of NCs derived from the classical sol-gel process has been unappreciated so far. All these issues will be comprehensively discussed in the first part of the talk. Next, we will demonstrate a novel general, non-external-surfactant-assisted, organometallic synthetic approach that yields high-quality ZnO NCs in the quantum size regime and passivated by monoanionic X-type organic ligands. Our comparative studies, including a cytotoxicity evaluation and Cu(I)-mediated functionalization, highlight the superiority of this novel wet-chemical method in the preparation of stable and well-passivated ZnO QDs over the traditional inorganic sol-gel procedure. Finally, we will present a novel bottom-up mechanochemical strategy for rapid mild-conditions synthesis of organic ligand-coated ZnO NCs and their further host-guest modification with β-cyclodextrin leading to water-soluble amide-β-CD-coated ZnO nanoparticles.
