Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) are interesting polyelectrolytes that combine the unique properties of ionic liquids (high ionic co nductivity, thermal and chemical stabilities) with those of polymers (mechanical stability, processing and tunable macromolecular design). Since 2013, we have largely developed a new class of PILs having 1,2,3-triazolium cationic groups the repeating unit (TPILs) [1 : Obadia M.M. and Drockenmuller E., Chem. Commun., 2016, 52, 2433]. The synthesis of TPILs merges the robust and orthogonal nature of the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition, the quantitative nature of N-alkylation of 1,2,3-triazoles and anion metathesis together with different chain growth or step growth polymerization techniques. Establishment of precise structure/properties relationships allowed the development of several TPILs having high thermal, chemical and electrochemical stabilities as well as high ionic conductivity. In addition, the use of the N-alkylation of 1,2,3-triazoles for the introduction of diverse functionalities demonstrates the ability of 1,2,3-triazolium chemistry to tackle unprecedented synthetic challenges and broaden the structural variety of PILs. The latest development in the synthesis of TPILs and their potential for the application in the field of energy will be summarized in this oral communication.
