Charge density wave and superconductivity in Transition Metal Dichalcogenides : the key role of anharmonicity

Mardi 5 avril 2016 13:30 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : LNCMI, salle de conférences "René Pauthenet" (bâtiment J, 2ème étage) - 25 rue des martyrs - 38000 Grenoble

Orateur : Matteo CALANDRA (Institut de Minéralogie et de Physique des Milieux Condensés de Paris, CNRS / Université Pierre et Marie Curie)

The interplay between charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in transition metal dichalcogenides has been a subject of intense research in the last 40 years. From the theoretical point of view much of the discussion has focused on the mechan ism at the origin of the CDW, namely if it is electronic driven or if it is due to an electron-phonon mechanism. Several recent theoretical calculations based on density functional theory in the linear response, seem to suggest that the harmonic approximation is capable of capturing the occurrence of the CDW instability with the correct ordering vector in several dichalcogenides. However, the temperature dependence of the soft phonon mode responsible for the CDW instability in several dichalcogenides cannot be reproduced in this framework. Here we show that a key interaction to properly describe the interplay between CDW and superconductivity is anharmonicity (phonon-phonon scattering). By applying ab initio calculation beyond the harmonic approximation to 2H NbSe2 under pressure, we obtain an accurate dependence of the (P,T) phase diagram of this material. We show that the rapid destruction of the CDW under pressure is mostly due to electron-phonon interaction and anharmonicity. Finally we show that the low-energy longitudinal acoustic mode that drives the CDW transition barely contributes to superconductivity, explaining the insensitivity of the superconducting critical temperature to the CDW transition at finite pressure. In the last part of the talk we also discuss the occurrence of the charge density wave instability in single layer NbS2 and NbSe2.
