Spin-helical Dirac fermions in nanostructures of disordered 3D topological insulators

Jeudi 12 mai 2016 11:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : Salle "Remy Lemaire" K 223 (1er étage) bât. K de l’institut Néel/CNRS

Orateur : Romain GIRAUD (Leibniz Institute IFW, Dresden, Germany)

Z2 topological insulators are attracting high interest for their novel electronic properties, related to unusual metallic states that develop at their interface. Gapless and spin-textured quasiparticles are weakly scattered by disorder and the Anderson localization becomes impossible. The most famous example is the quantum spin Hall phase in 2D, for which backscattering is suppressed, even in zero magnetic field. In a 3D topological insulator, as Bi2Se3, spin-helical Dirac fermions at the surface can be backscattered, but microscopic lengthscales are strongly enhanced with respect to the case of massive quasi-particles. This has important consequences on mesoscopic transport. In this talk, I will give an overview of our quantum transport studies of Bi2Se3 and Bi2Te3 nanostructures, combining vector magnetic fields and very low temperatures. Structural disorder induces a finite bulk conductivity, but surface transport can be studied without ambiguity in different ways : i) Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in high magnetic fields allow us to evidence all contributions to charge transport and to study band bending [1], and the anisotropic scattering of topological surface states is confirmed by transconductance measurements [2] ; ii) In a nanowire geometry, quantum interference results in periodic Aharonov-Bohm oscillations [3] or aperiodic non-universal conductance fluctuations [4], both of which unveil the quasi-ballistic nature of surface transport despite strong disorder.
