In material science, it is essential to have a good knowledge of the crystal structure of a material in order to understand its physical properties and thus improve them. T he emergence of nanomaterials requires working with appropriate structural characterization techniques, and electron diffraction is a perfect tool for this type of study. It presents the advantage of working individually on micro or nano sized particles, which corresponds to perform a diffraction experiment on single crystal. After introducing the state of the art on electron diffraction by explaining why crystal structure resolution based on electron diffraction data is a quite recent, I will describe one of the methods developed these past few years for structure resolution of new materials : electron diffraction tomography. This technique is easy to execute and allows collecting a large dataset, making possible to solve complex structures with large cell parameters and / or low symmetry. The structural resolution of the compound La6W2O15, which exhibits both features, will be described as an example.
