Theory of laser-induced magnetism from first principles

Mardi 30 mai 2017 11:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : Science Building seminar room SB036, ILL - 71 avenue des Martyrs - Grenoble

Orateur : M. BERRITTA (Department of Physics and Astronomy, Uppsala University, Sweden)

All-optical helicity-dependent magnetization switching has recently emerged as a promising way to control a material’s magnetization using short optical laser pulses1,2. A precise understanding of the underlying mechanism has not yet emerged. It is expected that a nonlinear opto-magnetic effect, the inverse Faraday effect (IFE), plays a role to coherently induce magnetization which assists switching. We present the first materials specific ab initio theory of the magnetization3 induced by circularly polarized laser light in metals. Our results provide new insights in the understanding of the inverse Faraday effect in non-magnetic as well as in magnetic materials. In the latter we calculate the induced magnetization in both longitudinal (light parallel to the magnetization of the material) and transversal (light perpendicular to the magnetization) configurations. We also provide a detailed study of how this magnetization is distributed in the spin and orbital components. Our results provide a roadmap for engineering suitable compounds and manipulating them in optimal configuration to achieve ultrafast magnetization switching.
