Search for a sterile neutrino with the STEREO experiment : Shielding optimisation and energy calibration

Light sterile neutrinos are currently a strongly discussed topic in neutrino physics. One indication of their existence and participation in neutrino oscillations is the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly, a deficit of about 6% between predicted and observed antineutrino fluxes in short-baseline reactor neutrino experiments. The STEREO experiment addresses this anomaly by searching for neutrino oscillations at a baseline of about 10 m from the compact core of the research reactor of the ILL.

This presentation covers parts of the preparation and commissioning of the STEREO experiment. This includes studies of the layout of the magnetic shielding, required to protect the deployed photomultiplier tubes from changing stray magnetic fields in the vicinity. Furthermore, characterisations of the reactor-related on-site background will be presented. This includes a mapping of the gamma-ray background, performed in order to define the requirements and to validate the efficiency of external, passive shielding, as well as a series of MCNP simulations to determine the impact of changes of reactor installations in the vicinity of STEREO on the background level.

Finally, an energy calibration procedure is proposed and applied to determine the intrinsically non-linear energy response of the detector. It can be used to adjust parameters in the Geant4-based detector simulation, developed by the collaboration, and to determine the energy scale with the required precision of ≤ 2%.
