There are not many techniques that directly provide the magnetization vector from a surface. We will discuss how to use low-energy electrons for such a purpose, and focus on two related techniques : spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in photoemission microscope. We will discuss their application to the observation of magnetic domains on magnetite, both to the surface of single crystals and nanostructures. Finally we will make the case for an effort to design new instruments in this area.
