Magnetic Metal-Organic Frameworks : a goldmine for low-dimensional and frustated magnetism

Metal ]organic frameworks (MOFs) are organic ]inorganic hybrid solids in which an inorganic (magnetic) 0D, 1D or 2D subnetwork is connected with adequately functionalized organic molecules to form a 3D framework. The field of MOFs expands at a remarkable pace, in part because of the limitless number of possibilities offered by the combination of organic and inorganic chemistries, but also because of their ability to produce interesting properties for both industrial applications and fundamental science. In particular, exciting architectures for the exploration of low ]dimensional and/or frustrated magnetism are often found among MOFs. The low ]dimensionality is almost inherent to MOFs, especially if long organic spacers are involved, while frustration emerges depending on the topology of the inorganic subnetwork. Through this presentation I will give various examples of magnetic MOFs. My interests are mainly focused towards compounds for which long ]range magnetic ordering sets at low temperature, although dynamical magnetic processes remain present, either because of the low ]dimensional or of the frustrated character of these systems.
