CdTe/CZT detectors development at CEA-LETI

Mercredi 4 décembre 2013 10:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : LOB-1-45, ESRF - 6 Rue Jules Horowitz - Grenoble

Orateur : Loick VERGER (CEA-LETI)

The mission of DETector Laboratory that belongs to CEA-Leti is to transfer innovative technologies to industrial partners. It is also to develop technology through R&D studies by making a bridge between academic universities. The purpose of the research at LDET in the field of radiological imaging and isotopic detection is to study and develop the next generation of X- and gamma-ray detectors used in the control and imaging systems developed by the major equipment manufacturers. The main application is medical imaging, namely morphological imaging (radiology and medical X-ray CT) and functional imaging (preclinical and clinical). Two other applications, control security, namely the control of baggage at airports and detection & identification of radioactive sources or illicit materials are also addressed. To prepare for these technological developments, LDET has invested in a CdTe/CdZnTe-based roomtemperature semiconductor detector coupled to a CMOS readout circuit that allows a high level of integration, improved performance and new features, but also in information processing to take advantage of new detector functionality for better system performance. Over fifteen years, LDET has applied a constructive approach in developing expertise and resources (technical know-how, modeling and detector simulation, means of characterization, detector signal processing and its integration in CMOS, and prototype testing) to design and build detection modules including their different components, from detector material to information processing. The LDET offer is unique because it includes all the technological building blocks of an imaging system while the vast majority of French and foreign laboratories has focused its R&D technology on one component or in cultivating a single area of expertise. Our studies and development are conducted through strong industrial partnerships (bilateral agreements, common laboratories) that we are keen to sustain, taking into account primarily the needs of our industrial partners. Typically, LDET laboratory is working on :
- The development of a new 2D gamma-ray spectrometric detectors combining a high energy resolution and a high spatial resolution for a SPECT system or source detection in partnership with BiospaceLab and other universities (ANR-TecSan). The original solution proposed by LETI is based on a combination of original CdZnTe detector architecture (orthogonal capacitive strips, 1 patent) that drastically reduces the number of electronic channels (16 384 pixels/1024 readout channels) and a specific collimator that improves detection efficiency and spatial resolution. A large field of view gamma-ray imager MyriaGami (10x10 cm²) with sub-millimetric spatial resolution (0.75 mm) and a good energy resolution (6% @ 122keV) has been built and first images have been obtained.
- The development of innovative photon counting and spectrometric X-ray detector architecture based on CdTe/CZT sensors that will be presented. We have demonstrated, over the recent past years, the feasibility of a complete X-ray full spectrometric chain with high energy resolution at high photon flux, with real-time processing thanks to the combination of optimized detector geometries and dedicated electronic readouts. We have an ongoing development based on this new detector for airport luggage control applications. New gamma-ray detector and energy resolved photon counting detector for X-ray applications is also part of our roadmap towards the "color imaging".
