The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) refers to temperature variations of a system in response to a change of an external magnetic field. The MCE is especially strong in geometrically frustrated magnets, which exhibit a residual ground state degeneracy. I briefly survey the theoretical background and a few recent experimental studies of the MCE. Monte Carlo simulations of an adiabatic temperature drop demonstrate that frustrated magnets are promising alternative refrigerant materials for low-temperature magnetic cooling.
