How beta-lactam antibiotics tear down the (cell) wall
Mardi 25 mars 2014 11:00
- Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : Salle des séminaires de l’IBS - 6 rue Jules Horowitz - Grenoble
Orateur : Thomas G. BERNHARDT (Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA Department of Microbiology and Immunobiology)
Penicillin and related beta-lactams are one of our oldest and most widely used antibiotic therapies. Although these drugs have long been known to target the final stages of bacterial cell wall assembly, surprisingly little is understood about the downstream consequences of target inhibition and their contribution to antibacterial
activity. Recent work will be presented highlighting the discovery of a previously unappreciated activity of beta-lactams involving the hyper-activation of a quality control system involved in cell wall biogenesis that enhances their lethal mode-of-action.
