We will review the mechanical basis of micro-motility by swimming and crawling, focusing in particular on the mechanical interactions with the environment. We will emphasize connections with geometric mechanics and control theory, and apply these tools to the estimation of speed and energy consumption in model 1D systems.
The results provide us with interesting clues for both the study of biological organisms and the engineering of bio-inspired devices. clustering of active or self-propelling colloids that interact by diffusiophoresis reminiscent of chemotaxis in bacterial systems.
