Spin-orbit coupling driven properties for selected ferromagnets and interfaces

Abstract- In this presentation, I consider examples of two types of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) driven material properties : (1) Magnetic Anisotropy Energy (MAE) and (2) selected SOC driven spin transport properties including (i) Anisotropic Magnetioresistance (AMR) and (ii) spin-orbital torque (SOT). This combination of properties is motivated by generic spin-electronic device considerations such as (i) thermal stability and (ii) detection/manipulation of the nano-magnet state. Different mechanisms of magnetic anisotropy and its temperature dependence are discussed within such examples of high anisotropy materials as (i) M-X where M = (Fe, Co), X= (Pt, Pd) ; (ii) Mn(Fe)-Y where Y=(Al, Bi, N) and (iii) interfaces Fe/MgO, Fe/W, Co/Pt, Mn2Au/Fe. To gain necessary understanding of MAE, its temperature dependence, AMR and SOT, we employ multi-scale modeling approach which combines a microscopic model of the magnetic interactions and statistical modeling/theory techniques [1, 2]. The microscopic model of the magnetic interactions is tested against measurements for nano-particulate and granular FePt thin films [3], MnBi temperature anomaly [4] and CoFeB/MgO interfaces [5]. We extend this approach to study SOT on domain walls (DW) at the 3d 4d(5d) interfaces which have been experimentally shown to be promising SOT systems [6]. We find that the non-collinear magnetic structure of DWs leads to spin torques with symmetries which are not present in the case of uniform magnetization switching. Finally, we discuss SOT dependence on the direction of the current and type of DWs.
