Nuclear magnetic shielding and spin-spin coupling in the deuterium hydride molecule

- Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : LNCMI, salle de conférences "René Pauthenet" (bâtiment J, 2ème étage) - 25 rue des martyrs - 38000 Grenoble
Orateur : Piotr GARBACZ (Faculty of Chemistry, University of Warsaw, Poland)
The talk will be devoted to very accurate experimental determination of fundamental NMR properties, particularly, the proton/deuteron (sH/sD) magnetic shielding and the indirect spin-spin coupling constant, J(D, H), in the HD molecule. These quantities are especially interesting in the context of testing of quantum electrodynamics. I will show that according to the results of gas-phase experiments the equality between sH and sD is violated, which indicates non-adiabatic effects in magnetic shielding for the HD molecule. Moreover, the studies of J(D, H) can be used for searching for a signature of hypothetical new particles – axions. Finally, I will discuss in detail why the effects of nuclear relaxation and intermolecular interactions are crucial for determination of spectral properties from gas-phase NMR experiments.
