Beta-decay with Ultracold Neutrons at Los Alamos

Mercredi 11 juin 2014 11:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : Seminar Room ILL4, 6 rue Jules Horowitz - Grenoble

Orateur : A. YOUNG (North Carolina State University)

Several ongoing experiments are a part of the ultracold neutron (UCN) research program at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, including UCNA, UCNB and UCNtau. UCNA is a relatively mature experiment which measures the angular correlation between the neutron spin and the emitted beta-particle following decay ("the beta-asymmetry"). The UCNA experiment’s most recent published results (of the 2010 data-set) provide a beta-asymmetry parameter Ao at just below the 1% precision level. We will present the status of our analysis of the 2011-2013 data set, which has roughly double the measured number of decays of the 2010 measurement and much improved systematic uncertainties. We will also touch on our progress on UCNB and UCNtau, both projects in the research and development phase. UCNB will replace the beta-detector packages in the UCNA spectrometer with thick ( 2mm), large ( 15cm), highly segmented Si detectors. This arrangement should permit the simultaneous detection of beta particles and recoil protons, making it possible to measure the beta-asymmetry, neutrino-asymmetry and perform precision beta-spectroscopy with the same apparatus. Finally, UCNtau is a large volume (roughly 700 liter) gravito-magnetic trap designed to measure the neutron lifetime using magnetically trapped UCN. The UCN populations in the trap will be measured using a V-foil activation technique as well as traditional techniques in which populations are monitored by UCN detectors coupled to the experiment through guides. Progress at the end of the 2013 LANSCE run cycle has set the stage for high statistics running of UCNtau in 2014.
