Calorimetric Low Temperature Detectors for Applications in Heavy Ion Physics

Mercredi 25 juin 2014 11:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : ILL 1 - Seminar Room, 6 rue Jules Horowitz - Grenoble

Orateur : P. EGELHOF (GSI)

The new concept of calorimetric low temperature detectors (CLTD`s), which is based on the collection of phonons, provides considerable advantage over conventional heavy ion detectors, based on charge or photon collection, with respect to basic detector properties [1]. Such detectors have therefore the potential to become powerful tools for various applications in heavy ion physics.

A brief overview of heavy ion physics at present and at the next generation heavy ion facilities is given with a special emphasis on GSI and FAIR. Then the operation principle of CLTD`s will be briefly discussed, and the design of dedicated detectors for heavy ions and their performance will be displayed. The potential advantages of such detectors are the more complete energy detection, the smaller energy gap of the detected quanta (phonons), leading to better counting statistics, and the absence of deadlayers and entrance windows. Therefore these detectors promise high energy resolution, good energy linearity, low detection thresholds and insensitivity against radiation damage. The response to the impact of heavy ions was investigated systematically for a wide range of energies (E = 0.1 – 360 MeV/amu) and ion species ( 4He ... 238U). Excellent results with respect to energy resolution, ΔE/E ranging from 1 to 5.10 -3 even for the heaviest ions, and other basic detector properties such as energy linearity with no indication of a pulse height defect have been obtained, representing a considerable improvement as compared to conventional heavy ion detectors based on ionization. With the achieved performance, CLTD`s bear a large potential for applications in various fields of basic and applied heavy ion research. A brief overview on a few prominent examples, such as high resolution nuclear spectroscopy, high resolution nuclear mass determination, as well as background discrimination in accelerator mass spectrometry, precise stopping power measurements of heavy ions in matter, or investigation of fission fragments is given, and first results are presented.

The application for the investigation of Z-distributions of fission fragments was recently proposed for an experiment at ILL. The experimental setup, planned for these investigations, will be discussed, and the results of recent feasibility studies at the Tandem accelerator of TU Munich will be presented.
