Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most prominent causes of bacterial infections in humans worldwide. A key host defense mechanism against S. aureus is phagocyte-mediated killing. The pathogen in return is well adapted to the human host. A major mechanism deployed by S. aureus to target host phagocytes is production of cytolytic toxins and particularly bicomponent pore-forming
toxins. I will present the identification of 5 GPCRs as the host receptors for three major staphylococcal toxins as well as how these findings led to new insights into S. aureus pathogenicity.
