POLAREX is a new experimental platform allowing to study the anisotropic decay of spin-oriented nuclei. Using the OLNO (On-Line Nuclear Orientation) method combining on-line implantation of radioactive nuclei with the LTNO (Low Temperature Nuclear Orientation) technique, we get an ensemble of spin-oriented nuclei.
NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) allows to measure nuclear electromagnetic moments and ground-state spins and thus obtain information about the wave function composition of the nuclear states. The low temperature orientation is obtained by cooling an ensemble of nuclei to temperatures of the order of 10 mK with a 3He-4He dilution cryostat under an external magnetic field ( 0.5 T). The nuclei are implanted into a ferromagnetic foil attached to the cold finger of the cryostat and thus oriented through the internal hyperfine fields (up to hundreds of Teslas). Now operational for off-line measurements at CSNSM, the POLAREX infrastructure will be moved to ALTO (Accélérateur Linéaire et Tandem d’Orsay) in order to study short-lived neutron-rich nuclei.
I will present in this seminar, the reconditioning of this experimental platform, the results of the commissioning, and perspectives for future experiments.
