Beginning in 2004, several different research groups reported resonant frequency shifts in torsional oscillator measurements of solid 4He that were explained by supersolidity. However, it was later found that, in nearly all cases, the apparent supersolidity could in fact be explained by elastic effects in the helium involving vibrating dislocations and their interactions with 3He impurities. In this presentation, I will show that we have achieved a comprehensive and quantitative understanding of the effects of dislocation motion on the mechanical response of solid He [1,2]. I will also give a brief introduction to the research I am beginning to carry out at the Institut Néel.
