The mother and daughter centrioles of the centrosome duplicate symmetrically in cycling cells to sustain proper genetic partitioning among daughter cells. In multiciliated cells, hundreds of centrioles are produced to nucleate an identical amount of motile cilia thatpropel physiological fluids. I will present the cellular mechanism driving large-scale centriole production in mammalian multiciliated cells where we identified the daughter centriole of the centrosome as the nucleation point for the new centrioles. I will discuss this new type of centrosome asymmetry and describe the cellular context allowing its emergence.
