Ultracold Neutrons in Canada : Development of the TRIUMF UCN source and the nEDM experiment

Ultracold neutrons (UCN) are neutrons that travel at a speed less than 8 m/s and exhibit the peculiar behavior of being able to be stored in magnetic, material, and gravitational bottles for periods ranging up to their beta-decay lifetime ( 15 min). They present an exciting avenue for performing fundamental neutron experiments such as : the search for a non-zero neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM), a precision measurement of the neutron lifetime, and precise measurements of neutron beta decay correlation coefficients, to name a few. These measurements have important consequences for extensions to the standard model of particle physics which could help explain the baryon asymmetry of our universe.
In collaboration with Japan, a new spallation based UCN source is under construction at TRIUMF, Canada’s National Lab for Nuclear and Particle Physics. Here spallation neutrons are cooled by deuterium ice and isopure helium cryogenic convertors. The first experiment planned is a highly anticipated measurement of the neutron’s EDM with an order of magnitude better sensitivity than current measurements. This experiment will employ a room temperature Ramsey Resonance based EDM apparatus, where it is anticipated that inhomogeneities and lack of stability of the applied magnetic fields will be the leading sources of systematic errors in the measurement. I will present the current status of the TRIUMF UCN source and discuss recent R&D efforts towards controlling these sources of systematic errors.
