Defining correspondences across brains : means and meanings

Jeudi 17 septembre 2015 11:30 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : Amphithéâtre Serge Kampf, Grenoble Institut des Neurosciences (GIN) - Bât. Edmond J. Safra, Chemin Fortune Ferrini CHU, La Tronche

Orateur : Guillaume AUZIAS (Institut des Neurosciences de la Timone, Marseille)

Defining correspondences across brains is mandatory for the compilation of statistics in neuroimaging, irrespective of the purpose of the study. It is for instance the case when you investigate the cortical regions consistently activated across a group of individuals during a given task using fMRI, but also when the focus of the work is on anatomical/structural aspects, and both in the presence of healthy and/or pathological populations. These correspondences are often defined using fully automated image processing pipelines that can be easily and routinely applied. Several distinct strategies can however be considered for this crucial step, each one relying on different assumptions and implementation choices. In this talk, I will discuss how and why these considerations must be taken into account at the time of interpreting the resulting statistics. I will introduce methods I have developed, with a focus on conceptual aspects and underlying assumptions. The influence of these assumptions on the interpretability will be discussed through the application of my methods in the context of morphometry, fMRI and functional connectivity analysis.
