Neutron Reflectometry : An “In-Depth” View on Magnetic Nanostructures

Novel physical properties in nanoscale materials often arise due to interactions across the interface between two dissimilar materials. Frequently, these proximity effects can be tailored into novel functionalities of hybrid materials which are applicable to a host of different technological areas across several disciplines. An in-depth understanding of the interfacial properties promoting the new functional behavior is therefore indispensable. Neutron scattering has traditionally played a dominant role in the investigation of buried structures and interfaces, which are typically hardly accessible by any other non-destructive technique. In particular, neutron reflectometry and small-angle scattering provide access to length scales from a few nanometer to several micrometer. Thus, fundamental exchange lengths to sizes typically visible in optical microscopy can be probed, which leads to a range of applications in hard- and soft-condensed matter research, biology and magnetism.

A particular benefit arises from the sensitivity to buried magnetic moments, allowing a depth-resolved determination of amplitudes and directions of magnetizations in nanostructured materials. The ability to separate chemical and magnetic bulk and interfacial properties of hybrid materials show to be crucial for numerous spin-electronics applications.

In my talk I will give an overview about applications of neutron scattering with focus on the investigation of magnetic thin films and heterostructures. I will present recent examples of neutron reflectometry on different magnetic thin film systems with different materials and fundamentally different questioning, such as interlayer exchange coupling, exchange bias or magnetic gradients in phase transitions. In addition, I will demonstrate how lateral information on the magnetic domain structure is obtained simultaneously by off-specular scattering. I will conclude with recent developments at the ILL, including advances of small-angle neutron scattering into the time domain, currently with time resolution in the sub-millisecond range.

Biography :

Dr. Thomas Saerbeck, research scientist at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France, received his Diploma in Physics in 2008 from the University of Münster, Germany. From 2008 to 2012 he joined the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation and received his PhD in Physics in 2012 from the University of Western Australia (Prof. R. Stamps, Dr. F. Klose), followed by a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California San Diego, US, in the Center of Advanced Nanoscience of Ivan Schuller. Since 2014 he has joined the ILL as an instrument responsible of the D17 polarized neutron reflectometer. In this role Thomas operates and advances the instrument and welcomes international research teams to conduct their own research using polarized neutrons. Thomas research interests lie in exchange phenomena and proximity effects in thin film magnetism and hybrid structures involving complex oxides and superconducting thin films. By combining materials with different physical properties into nanostructured thin film hybrid materials he uses neutron and synchrotron scattering techniques to investigate emergent phenomena and novel magnetic or superconducting properties.
