The investigation of fundamental properties of the neutron is closely related to astroparticle physics. Examples are the search for a permanent electric dipole moment of the neutron and the precise determination of its lifetime. Besides this, the test of its electric neutrality is related to the question of electric charge quantisation (ECQ) which is of high interest in theoretical physics. ECQ, being an empirical well-established finding, cannot be derived however straightforward from the theoretical structure of the Standard Model. A dequantisation of the electric charge could result in so-called ’rest-charges’ of the known particles such as the neutron. Our project aims to test the electric neutrality of the free neutron in an experiment with ultra-cold neutrons with a sensitivity on the level of 10-22qe.
