Abstract :
Status of the UCN Source Project a TRIUMF
The TUCAN collaboration (TRIUMF’s UltraCold Advanced Neutron source) is currently setting up the first UltraCold Neutron (UCN) source in Canada. This source uses the combination of a neutron spallation driven source with a heavy water primary moderator and a superfluid helium UCN converter. Using expertise accumulated during the development of thesource at at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), a UCN density of 26 UCN/cm3 at 90 neV critical energy was achieved in Japan. Then the source has been moved to Canada in 2016. Over the last years, the proton beamline and spallation target dedicated to UCN production were commissioned successfully. In addition, we were able to moderate spallation neutrons to thermal and cold energies. Finally, successful cooling tests of the UCN converter below 1 K were also performed and UCN were produced. The preliminary results from the recent first production of UCN in Canada will be presented in this talk.
