In plants, the female reproductive organ is covered with epidermal cells named the stigmatic papillae, capable of trapping the male partner or pollen grains. This pollen may be from many sources, such as closely or distantly related plants or even from the same flower in case of hermaphroditic species. After adhesion to the stigmatic cells, only compatible pollen germinate and produce a pollen tube that transports the male gametes to the ovules where the fertilization occurs. By contrast, undesirable or incompatible pollen is arrested on its way towards the ovules. We are currently developing live imaging and transcriptomic approaches to decipher the molecular and cellular mechanism underlying the pollen recognition at the stigmatic surface.
