Stress Engineering through LTT Multilayer Weld Joints - Residual Stresses vs. Hot Crack Susceptibility

Low transformation temperature (LTT) weld filler materials offer an attractive alternative to cost intensive postweld treatments as they can mitigate detrimental welding residual stresses. Compared to conventional weld filler materials LTT alloys are characterized by a late martensite transformation at low temperatures, which can result in compressive residual stresses in the weld line. By this means they can be used to intentionally induce compressive residual stresses in the weld through the welding process. The resulting high strength of these filler materials makes them potentially applicable to high-strength steels as well as for a large amount of requested repair works in low strength steel structures. Different LTT alloying concepts are proposed in literature ; hence the local chemical composition has a strong impact on the hot crack susceptibility, which again can compete with the residual stress formation. Since specific stress engineering requires reliable experimental residual stress analysis, we performed residual stress analysis using complementary methods for multipass weld lines processed by MAG welding for different LTT alloys with varying chemical compositions. In this regard the contour method was combined with neutronographic residual stress analysis at the instrument SALSA@ILL. Residual stresses determined this way were discussed, inter alia, with regard to the hot crack susceptibility.
