The biological effect of neutrons of low and medium energies is not well- known. Previous studies have described values ranging from 1.4 to more than 10. Apart from the importance in radioprotection, there are other aspects where a very good estimation of relative biological effectiveness (RBE) factors is necessary. One is the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). This promising therapy was used as an experimental treatment in more than 700 patients, but there are some aspects that need to be improved, like the estimation of the biological effect.
To study the effect of low energy neutrons, a series of experiment were performed at ILL. These experiments consist in the irradiation of in vitro samples (healthy tissue and tumour human cells lines) with low energy neutrons. The instrument used at ILL was Pf1b, due to the fact that there is almost no fast neutron contamination and also low gamma emission. Results of the experiment will be shown and compare with previous data.
