Mott insulators for neuromorphic computing

Mardi 7 mai 2019 11:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : Salle "Louis Weil" E424 - Institut Néel -bâtiment E, 3ème étage, CNRS Polygone scientifique, 25 rue des martyrs, 38000 Grenoble

Orateur : Etienne JANOD (IMN, Nantes)

During the last half century, the tremendous development of computers based on von Neumann architecture has led to the revolution of the information technology. However, von Neumann co mputers are outclassed in performance and energy efficiency by the mammal brain in numerous data-processing applications such as pattern recognition and data mining. This has triggered a broad interest worldwide in neuromorphic computing, a field of research aiming at emulating brain-like behavior through the implementation of artificial neural networks based on massively interconnected artificial synapses and neurons. In order to effectively implement artificial neural networks directly in hardware, it is mandatory to develop two essential building blocks, the artificial neurons and synapses. Interestingly, a possible way to tackle these challenges is to turn towards quantum materials, i.e. materials which properties result from strong correlations and/or the topological nature of their electronic states. In particular, the Metal-Insulator Transitions (MIT) existing in the class of Mott insulators generates currently a large interest worldwide, and the terminology ‘Mottronics’ was coined to represent the concept of electronic technology exploiting such Mott transitions. It was indeed recently demonstrated that the electric field, a control parameter easy to implement in microelectronics, offered an easy way of controlling MIT in Mott insulators. Moreover, it was established that this ‘Electric Mott transition’ can be used to implement the critical building block of a Hardware Neural Network, the artificial (Mott) neuron. Beyond this example, this seminar will be an opportunity to review the different avenues currently explored for using Mott insulators in neuromor phic applications.
