I will first introduce the context of metal recovery through liquid/liquid extraction. Then, I will review the (quite numerous) systems that are used in view of metal recovery from aqueous phases, following the current categorization. I will show this classification is not relevant, and I will propose a new way to sort these chemical systems, based on the ability of the biphasic system to display a water-proof (or solvent-proof) interface. This is in strong connection with the accepted collaboration between LiPhy and Lepmi.
