HUMAN EXPOSURE TO BISPHENOL A AND ADVERSE EFFECTS : FROM PRECONCEPTION TO PUBERTY

Mardi 21 mai 2019 11:00 - Duree : 1 heure
Lieu : Salle de Conférence de l’IAB - Rond Point de La Chantourne, 38700 La Tronche (arrêt de tram Grand Sablon, ligne B)

Orateur : Vicente MUSTIELES (University of Grenada, Spain)

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a recognized reproductive toxicant and endocrine disruptor based on its ability to interfere with different aspects of hormonal homeostasis even at low doses. BPA is a highproduction man-made chemical used worldwide in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resin liners of canned food among many other applications. More than 9 out of 10 people present detectable BPA concentrations in urine. Growing evidence indicates that BPA is harmful in laboratory animals and may adversely affect human health, especially during development. Therefore, BPA is currently in the spotlight of current risk assessments and policy regulations, mainly due to concerns about its possible adverse effects on children’s reproductive health, neurodevelopment, and obesity/metabolism. One of the most decisive susceptibility factors for endocrine disruptors is the window of development in which exposure occurs. This seminar will present and contextualize human data on BPA associations when exposure occurs as early as preconception, during pregnancy and peripuberty. The main issues regarding the regulation and/or substitution of this non-persistent chemical will also be discussed.
