muX : measuring muonic X-rays at PSI with a germanium array detector

A muonic atom is an excellent system to study the interaction between the muon and the atomic nucleus due to the large overlap of the muon wave function in the lower orbits with the nucleus. Muonic X-rays provide easy access to this system, as they are emitted each time a negative muon gets capture by an atom. The muX project at the Paul Scherrer Institute exploits the coverage and multiplicity of a full high-purity germanium array in combination with muon, electron and neutron detectors to study muonic atoms in detail.

The physics program is focusing on atomic parity violation (APV). A measurement of the charge radius of 226Ra will serve as an important input for an upcoming APV experiment with Ra ion in a Paul trap. Our collaboration developed a new technique utilizing transfer reactions in a H2/D2 gas cell to stop a standard muon beam in a few micrograms of target material. We are also pursuing measuring APV directly in muonic atoms in 2S1S transitions. As a short-term goal, we want to significantly improve the signal to noise for this low intensity transition.

In addition, we have extracted the quadrupole moment of 185Re and 1987Re from the hyperfine structure the X-ray spectrum, and we have studied the muonic cascade in noble gases after transfer from muonic hydrogen.

An extended experimental campaign is planned for the fall of 2019, where we have the opportunity to deploy the MiniBall germanium array from ISOLDE/CERN.
