Strain Localisation During the Yielding of Soft Materials

We discuss recent progress in understanding the process of yielding in soft materials, with a particular focus on the phenomenon of strain localisation. The primary focus will be on shear flows, in which the localisation takes the form of shear bands. Time permitting, we will also discuss extensional flows, in which the localisation takes the form of an extensional neck. We shall mostly consider strain localisation in the bulk, but will also make some comments (in shear) concerning the phenomenon of `wall slip’ : a widely observed form of strain localisation that arises where a fluid meets the hard walls of its flow container.
