Sleep plays an important role in memory but the mechanisms by which it intervenes remain highly controversial. Brain activity during sleep, as during wakefulness, is characterized by very rapid global and local changes related to previous learning. The links between the dynamics of brain acti-vity and synaptic plasticity, a major cellular model of memory, remain largely unknown.
By recording brain areas involved in spatial memory, we show that synaptic changes were closely related to cortical dynamics during memory processing.
