Complex orderings in metal thiocyanate perovskite-analogues

Molecular frameworks, containing molecular anions or cations as key framework components, are intriguing because they can show orderings forbidden in more conventional, atomic solid state materials. In this talk, I will describe a new family of perovskite-analogue materials AxM[Bi(SCN)6]. These materials have striking colours and show a wide variety of structural orderings rarely found in atomic perovskites : including a diversity of molecular defects ; non-Glazer octahedral tilts ; and ‘block’ A-site cation order. We go on to show that these orderings could provide new routes to ferroic order.
