Photovoltaic field is an exciting domain where advanced research is close to industrial R&D. In spite of a negative economic context in USA and Europe, some technologies would become a real challenger to replace silicon modules in the close future. Second generation of photovoltaic modules known as thin films technologies is expected to have better efficiency and a lower cost than silicon. My presentation will be on one of the second generation materials : CuInGaSe2 (CIGS).
After a general introduction of photovoltaic, the presentation will first focus on the CIGS material : deposition techniques, intrinsic properties, stoichiometry control and the role of impurities. Then I will describe heterojunction solar cell and give the key to understand how CIGS solar cell world record efficiency reaches 20.4%. Finally I will introduce thin film modules compared to silicon module and explain the strength of this technology : monolithic interconnection.
