Abstract :
Linear spin wave theory has enjoyed remarkable success in modelling the spin excitations of localized magnets. The typical approach is to project the system into an effective spin-only model and treat the problem semi-classically. However, in real crystals such a projection is not always valid, owing to a poor separation of single-ion energy scales. In this talk I will discuss a flexible framework which allows for the treatment of multiple degrees of freedom and present some applications in the modelling of neutron scattering experiments on real systems.
