As the field of materials science continues to mature, our ability to manufacture materials with targeted properties improves, as evidenced by the remarkable high-performance steels produced by Olson et al. [1] using a computational design approach. There are now efforts underway to utilize similar concepts for the accelerated design and discovery of materials with enhanced electrochemical properties, with the expressed purpose of addressing today’s energy and environmental challenges [2]. I will review past efforts and discuss current strategies to develop new complex oxide materials for energy, emphasizing the use of in situ synchrotron techniques to probe the structure and composition of the growing material. It is shown that such methods can be invaluable even when constructing a crystal atomic plane-by-atomic plane.
